A real band, not an AI band

A radio host asked us, half joking, whether we were actually a band. This is the answer Dustin gave, before anybody was asking that question in earnest:

“We’re a band, man. That’s the reason we exist. Why we started in the first place · to be a real band, not an AI band, but a real band.”

That was on Livewire, unprompted, in an interview about a grief song. It has aged strangely. There are acts on playlists now with nobody in them · generated voice, generated guitar, a photograph of people who do not exist, and a listener count it would take a real group a decade of vans and bad rooms to build. Bandcamp has started refusing music made that way. If you have begun checking before you get attached, that is a reasonable habit and we are not offended by it.

So here is the check

On the Music page there is a mixer holding the six separate recordings that make up Healing. Click any of us out and the song keeps going without that part. Solo one and you get a person alone in a room · the string noise, the breath before the line, the timing that is nearly right. We did not build that to prove a point. It is just what the multitrack is, and taking a song apart is more interesting than being told about it.

Who that is

Cliff Hutchison sings. Dustin Raney and Chris Williams play guitar. Carson Seelinger plays bass, Caleb Harris plays drums, Jay Calhoun plays organ. Six friends from Little Rock, Arkansas who had all played in other bands in their twenties, in rooms around town · Juanita’s, the Rev Room, Sticky Fingerz.

Jay’s account of his own role, for the record: it is good to be the weakest link in the band, and then you are playing with people better than you.

How it actually gets made

It started in March of 2023, in the room above Dustin’s garage, with a conversation Cliff describes as defining the relationship · six men in their thirties and forties going round the room asking what they actually wanted this to be. Nobody set a deadline. The room was only ever meant to hold demos.

The early evidence is not flattering and we are keeping it. On the first two or three songs, Caleb had no kit in there. He played the drums with his fingers on a MIDI keyboard. There is video.

That is still roughly how it works. Ideas get built in that room late at night, sent out to the group, and come back with melodies and words on them. When something is good enough to leave the demo state it goes to Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford of joan, who do the real engineering and mixing. Most of us have kids and day jobs. The songs get learned on weeknights, after bedtime. It took two years to release a single because, as Dustin put it, it was easier to get studio time than practice time.

The honest part

None of this is proof. A determined faker could stage every bit of it, and six clean stems would be the easiest part to fake. What we can tell you is that the room is real, that the band exists because Cliff and Jay got talking at a Way Away show at the White Water Tavern about playing again after ten years off, and that the first show sold out that same room in June of 2026 · five originals, three of them never played in public before, in front of people who could see us.

Come to the next one and the question answers itself.
